PORT AUTHORITY OF BILBAO | The EC will subsidise a project for the electrification of the port's quays

Sept.-Oct. 2022 | Puerto de Bilbao NEWS 98

The Port Authority of Bilbao and the European Commission have signed an agreement for subsidising the BilbOPS project within the CEF Transport 2021-2027 aid, amounting to just over 14 million euros.

This strategic project for the Port Authority of Bilbao, reported in No. 96 of this publication, consists of the electrification of quays where regular lines dock in the port of Bilbao and the cruise liner terminal. The aim is to provide electricity to ships during their stay in the harbour, thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40%, as well as vibrations and noise that are harmful to the environment.

The first tender for the project will be called at the end of 2022, and it will be operational in 2025 with an overall investment of almost 52 million euros. To finance this, the Port Authority had, up to now,  a subsidy of 4.3 million from the programme subsidising Recovery and Resilience  Mechanisms, specifically for deployment in quay A5.
