PETRONOR | Receives European support for its 100MW electrolyser project

Petronor will receive European funds to commission a 100MW renewable hydrogen production plant. The ‘Bay of Biscay Hydrogen’ electrolyser project, presented by Repsol and Petronor, has been acknowledged by the European Commission as “of special importance and common European interest  (IPCEI)”. Obtaining the IPCEI seal is a true acknowledgement for Petronor in the process of developing renewable hydrogen in Euskadi.

This project was one of the seven approved in the whole country, which together can receive public aid of up to 5,200 million euros for implementation. 

The initiative of Repsol and Petronor contemplates the development, construction and operation of a 100MW plant producing renewable hydrogen. 

The production of this plant will be destined to decarbonise great industrial consumers around the port of Bilbao, the left bank of the Nervión river and neighbouring areas, which in this manner will be able to progress in decarbonisation. Moreover, the local production of renewable hydrogen using electrical energy generated in renewable parks in the peninsula will increase energy supply security for all consumers that use it.

The project is currently in the design and development phase, and construction of the plant will begin in 2023, with production planned for the second half of 2024. 

The ‘Bay of Biscay Hydrogen’ initiative plays an essential role in the development of the Basque Hydrogen Corridor (BH2C), a consortium led by Petronor with the participation of 80 organizations and which promotes a decarbonised hydrogen economy in Euskadi.
