Bilbaína de Alquitranes, S.A. (BASA), empresa avalada por más de un siglo de experiencia en el sector, centra su actividad industrial en la destilación de alquitrán de hulla procedente de las baterías de cok de los principales grupos siderúrgicos europeos.

Tras su adquisición en 1990 por la empresa Fábrica de Productos Químicos, S.A. (SANA), el grupo ha llevado a cabo una importante renovación tecnológica de sus plantas con el fin de mejorar y ampliar todos sus procesos de producción y dotarse de los medios apropiados para enfrentarse a la fuerte competencia del sector.

Un proceso de mejora continua, basado en la modernización y cualificación del equipo humano, totalmente adaptado a las modernas tecnologías que existen en el mercado.

La destilería se encuentra ubicada en Lutxana-Barakaldo, a 5 kilómetros de Bilbao, en la Margen Izquierda de la Ría de Bilbao, zona industrial ligada al desarrollo de la industria pesada española.

Bilbaína de Alquitranes, S.A. (BASA) centra su actividad en la destilación fraccionada de alquitrán de hulla, utilizando para ello dos instalaciones: una de destilación en continuo y otra en discontinuo. En ambas instalaciones se desarrolla el mismo proceso y la razón de su coexistencia es únicamente disponer de flexibilidad en la producción. 

Como resultado de este proceso de destilación del alquitrán se obtienen varios productos:

1. Breas, destinadas básicamente a la industria del  aluminio y grafito.
2. Naftalinas, producto con innumerables aplicaciones, como colorantes, superplastificante, etc.
3. Creosotas, empleadas en el tratamiento de la madera.
4. Aceites, principalmente para la fabricación de negro de humo, y otros derivados.
5. ​Alquitranes, especiales para la obtención de impermeabilizantes, refractarios, etc.

Una segunda línea de fabricación se desarrolla en el solidificador de brea, en el cual se obtiene la brea en estado sólido.

Una tercera actividad es la que se desarrolla en el cristalizador y escamador de naftalina, en la que se obtienen precisamente naftalinas.
